October 15 is Global Handwashing Day. And our right-hand man, Dexter, is here to give you an exclusive look at what makes this day so exciting. Just imagine: a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

And here comes Dexter to tell you why
Hi there, I’m Dexter, but you already knew that... But did you know that my name is rooted in an ancient language? It’s the truth – I was named Dexter to allude to the Latin ‘dextra,’ which literally translates to ‘the right hand.’ And as a literal right hand, my favourite day of the year is unequivocally the Global Handwashing Day. This day also celebrates a rich and long history of hygiene and heroes that has helped us learn what we know today about proper hand hygiene. The theme for this year’s Global Handwashing Day is ‘Our Future is at Hand – Let’s Move Forward Together.’

Dexter takes action
We’ve all been busy lately keeping our hands clean (and out of our mouths, noses, and other people’s business …) as much as we can and especially when we’re around other people. Because hands like me are more than vehicles for human connection and affection – unfortunately, we’re also a big part of infection. This is why days like Global Handwashing Day are so awesome. This is our day to be showered – literally – with care and affection in the form of soap, water, great information and global advocacy for universal hand hygiene. If the past year has taught me anything, it’s that we need collective action to address the historic neglect of hand hygiene investments, policies, and programs once and for all.

Now you understand why Global Handwashing Day is such a big deal – for me and for the world. So how can we make this day last all year? Well, to put in the universally understood words of J.Lo: let’s get loud. By calling on our community to take action, we can all become hand hygiene champions. It only takes ten seconds to share a post with the hashtag #GlobalHandwashingDay, so think of what you can achieve with ten fingers at your disposal! Hands are such a great tool to get people going – we can reach out, communicate and really shred a guitar solo.
